The frame / seven rituals
What people do, not who they are
Every record is filed under a ritual rather than an identity. Provinces are metadata underneath: five of the nine have records in this archive so far, and the gaps are shown rather than hidden.
- 01The BraaiFire, meat, and whoever is standing around it.Anything from a pavement grill selling to passers-by to a full Sunday spread. The thread is the same: coals, patience, and the fact that standing near the fire is a way of being included.02
- 02The RankLoading, waiting, and fixing the thing before it moves. The rank is a workplace, a waiting room and a workshop. Loading, calling, repairing, queuing — the ordinary labour of moving a country that mostly moves by minibus.02
- 03The Bread RunThe shop at the corner that is open before anything else.Spaza, tuck shop, container shop. One door, one window, bread, airtime, paraffin, cold drink — the smallest unit of retail in the country, and the one that runs the longest hours.02
- 04The SalonA chair, a mirror, and three hours of the week that are yours. The salon is a service and a sitting room at once. It is the ritual of being made ready, and the conversation that happens while it happens.02
- 05The TradeGoods on a table, goods on a pavement, goods on a head.Flowers, fruit, clothing, vegetables. Selling where the people already are, and the arrangement of a stall as a piece of design done by hand every morning.03
- 06Match DayOne screen, one room, everyone in it.The shared screen — stadium, living room, tavern, street corner. Where the country briefly agrees on the same thing at the same time.01
- 07The Long RoadThe distance between provinces, taken for granted by those who travel it.The road out and the landscape it crosses. Half the country is a long drive from the other half, and the trip itself is a ritual with its own stops.02
